What is Green?

But What is a Green Spot?

That’s a question that I have been pondering for some time. After all, if a restaurant uses napkins made from recycled paper, but packages “leftovers” in Styrofoam is it really “green friendly?” While some “Green Spots” really aren’t “Green,” meaning that they use 100% wind power, 100% recycled paper, pay to off-set the carbon emitted by trucks transporting goods….. but uses recycled paper…shouldn’t they get some credit? Truthfully, it is really difficult to be “fully green” and since my Carbon output is  ultimately combined with Your Carbon output  (because we do live on the same planet….) then even a slight decline in some restaurant’s carbon footprint, is actually a benefit we all enjoy. So What is Green? There are many answers, but for 10 Steps To Greener it is an effort….a “first step.” Let’s celebrate and support small changes and hope that they lead to greater and more institutionalized change.

  1. If you go slowing and do the research before you purchase you will find a lot of green supplers. Are your cleaning supplies green. Check out my web page. My cleaning product is truly organic and has over 50 uses. We have a bleach replacement that works. Last 3 days – where bleach less than 24 hours. Ours lasts 3 days. Plus the white house is using these products. If its good for the president its good for your resturant.

  2. Jen- Your business sounds really interesting- I know a lot of small businesses could use some assistance in greening their efforts. Have you listed your company on http://www.greenmeetup.com? Thanks again for your comment!

  3. It is certainly challenging determining what is green and it is easy to feel hypocritical. I don’t profess to be Green but I do make small efforts. I switched to cloth napkins at home which has actually been huge in my house. I work for a start-up website that helps small businesses get started with their efforts and we focus on the practical ways to get started – from lighting changes and recycled products for the break room to the big stuff like solar panels. I am continually in the green mindset at home and at work and I continually strive to be more action-oriented. I look forward to exchanging ideas here.

    Thanks!
